Austria To Host World Amateur Team Championships in 2029
SINGAPORE (6 October) – Austria has been selected as the site of the 2029 World Amateur Team Championships, the International Golf Federation (IGF) announced at its Biennial Meeting.
“This was an outstanding bid, and the Austrian Golf Association will be a wonderful host for the leading amateur players in the world.” said IGF Executive Director Antony Scanlon. “The IGF looks forward to bringing these historic championships to Austria for the first time.”
The World Amateur Team Championships in 2029 will be hosted by the Austrian Golf Association, and the competitions will be played at Fontana Golf Club.
“The awarding of the World Amateur Team Championships 2029 to Austria marks a historic milestone for our sport and stands as a great testament to the work of recent years. After intensive and consistent development efforts, this is well-deserved recognition that Austria plays a respected and strong role in international golf,” said Gerhard Frühling, President of the Austrian Golf Association. “For us as a federation, one thing is paramount: we want to create an event that sustainably strengthens golf in Austria — organizationally, infrastructurally, and culturally. The WATC 2029 represent a unique opportunity to position Austria as a golf destination in the heart of Europe and to create a lasting legacy for future generations.”
“The awarding of the 2029 World Championships to FONTANA is a powerful signal and at the same time a distinction for our golf facility. It underscores the importance that FONTANA holds in international golf and confirms the consistent effort with which we have developed our course into one of the leading venues in Europe,” said Siegfried Wolf, Owner of Fontana. “For us, it is a historic milestone to be able to welcome the world’s best amateur players to our club. We will do everything in our power to create conditions that allow for peak athletic performance and, together with the Austrian Golf Association, our members, guests, and partners, to create an event worthy of the format and significance of these World Championships.”
Both championships feature the world’s leading amateurs and are played over 72 holes of stroke play. Each country is represented by a team of two or three players.
The men’s competition of the 2025 World Amateur Team Championship, hosted by the Singapore Golf Association, will begin on 8 October and conclude on 11 October at Tanah Merah Country Club, with 36 teams competing. The 2025 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship concluded on 4 October with USA claiming its 15th Espirito Santo Trophy in a tiebreaker over the Republic of Korea and Spain. A total of 36 teams competed in the championship.
The World Amateur Team Championships in 2027 will be hosted by the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation, and the 2027 competitions will be played at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.
