The old was introduced to the new in Rio de Janeiro recently when the first Tournament Administration and Referee School (TARS) was staged in the Brazilian city which will host golf’s return to the Olympic Games in August.

One of the world’s oldest and enduring item of silverware - the Claret Jug - which is awarded to The Open Golf Champion every year, was proudly on display at the impressive new Olympic course, Reserva da Marapendi, for the first Rules education event held in the Olympic city.

A total of 99 participants – golf referees and those interested in the Rules of the game - attended the two Level 3 TARS events in Buenos Aires and Rio, which were organised by The R&A in conjunction with the Argentine Golf Association and the Brazil Golf Confederation.

Delegates took part in practical demonstrations, sessions on refereeing and tournament administration skills at both TARS.

Neil Cleverly, the Head Greenkeeper at the Gil Hanse-designed new Olympic course, spoke to the group, many of whom will be volunteering at the Olympic Golf competition, about the construction and design of the new course.

Shona McRae, Assistant Director - Rules at The R&A, said: “The TARS events were a resounding success and we thank our hosts for making us feel so welcome in both Argentina and Brazil throughout the week.

“It was great to meet delegates from across the continent in what is a very exciting time for South American golf.

“The sport returns to the Olympic Games for the first time in 112 years and many of the TARS attendees in Rio de Janeiro will be volunteering at the Olympic Golf event in August.”
